Chapter 5
Starting Over

Previously in Beyond the Darkness

Looking up slightly Bejamin noticed the Chimchar from before. He knew that he belonged to the girl that had caught him.

Letting go of his father's leg he decided to speak up for himself. "I don't want to go with you! You can't make me! I'm gonna stay here with my Dad." he said. Stomping his paw at the last sentence.

Starkk put his hands up in defense. "Hey, take it easy. No one's going to force you to do anything you don't want to. You don't have to worry about being forced to go anywhere." Starkk explained.

"Oh, but you should be worried. Very, very worried."

Now~

Starkk slowly turned his head once he had heard the voice. He knew that voice from somewhere, but where? Finally seeing the one that was there with them, Starkk was surprised. It was the Bidoof from before. "You." he growled.

The Bidoof only chucked, taking out his small chunk of wood. With a smirk he charged at the two Pokemon. The Luxray had no choice but to stay out of it. Luxray weren't exactly known to live in the area. This was Starkk's and Bejamin's fight. However, there was something that he could do. Leaving the Two Pokemon, he left to find their Trainer.

Elena was sitting in a chair with her head on the table. "Elena, we'll find him. Both of them." Lucas said.

He just came back from the Pokemon Center's cafe with two hot cups of tea. Setting one of the drinks in front of Elena, he sat down across from her.

Elena just stared at her drink sadly. "I just wanted to make a Pokemon Band. But in order to do that, I have to learn more about Pokemon. That's why I'm on this journey." Elena said close to tears. Lucas gave Elena a sympathetic glance.

"I know how you feel Elena. I was devastated when I saw a Pokemon die for the first time. It always sad to see this happen to new trainers, but it's unavoidable." Lucas explained.

Elena sighed and got up from the table. "Thanks for the pep talk Lucas. It kind of helped. But I still need to find Little Shinx and Starkk." she said as she started to leave.

"Staarrr!"

Elena and Lucas turned to the cry. At the forest behind the Pokecenter, two Starly were perched on a branch. The Starly took off into the sky, flying over the forest as they left.

"That was strange." Lucas said rubbing the back of his head.

As soon as he said that, a Luxray jumped out from the bush. Elena and Lucas stood perfectly still. "Uh, Lucas is that the same Luxray as before?" she asked quietly.

Before Lucas could answer the Luxray walked over to Elena and laid down, looking at her. "I think he wants you to get on his back. But I'm not sure if that's a good idea." Lucas said. The large creature nodded and continued to stare at Elena.

Elena sighed and got on. Ignoring the protests of Lucas, the Luxray ran into the forest. Starkk, Little Shinx, please be ok. she prayed.

Bejamin felt himself being thrown into a tree. Starkk struggled to stay up. Boss chuckled as he and his small group of Bidoof surrounded the two wounded Pokemon. It was similar to before, only they weren't alone. "We'll have to work together in order to beat these guys." Starkk whispered to Bejamin.

Bejamin growled at Starkk, "I can take care of myself. I don't need anyone's help!" he shouted as he charged towards one of the Bidoof. Using Tackle, Bejamin sent the Pokemon back several feet. That was when the Pokemon really started fighting.

As Bejamin quickly finished off his opponent, he was soon attacked by another Bidoof. Starkk surprised the young Shinx by jumping over him, using Scratch on the Bidoof. Bejamin Tackled another Bidoof, sending him flying into a bush.

"I said I don't-" he started before Starkk had cut him off.

"It doesn't matter if you need my help!" he shouted, attacking an oncoming Bidoof. "We're a part of a team weather you like it or not! Besides, I'm not fighting for you. I'm fighting for Paco, and Elena!" he shouted. Attacking the nearest Bidoof with Scratch he quickly knocked it out, Starkk could feel himself slowly getting stronger.

Bejamin felt like he was paralyzed. Starkk's words made him question: Why he was fighting?  

He was fighting to get stronger of course, but there had to be another reason. With a soft growl he tackled a Bidoof behind Starkk. The fire type looked behind him and saw the fallen Bidoof. With unspoken words the two Pokemon fought the oncoming opponents back to back. Starkk was using the only attack he knew, as was Bejamin.

One of the Bidoof tackled into Bejamin sending him bumping into Stark. Both fell to the ground. Bejamin got off of Starkk and charged at the Bidoof that tackled him. This time, he opened his mouth and bit down on the Bidoof's arm. The Pokemon cried out and tried to get the Pokemon to let go of him.

Starkk watched as the young Pokemon learned a new attack. Boss, the leader of these Bidoof stood in front of him. The Bidoof spat out his chunk of wood and took his battle stance. Starkk glared at the Bidoof that took his little brother.

"You gonna send in that pipsqueak or are you going to fight me?" the Bidoof asked the Chimchar.

"I won't let you take anyone else from Elena." Starkk vowed. He was going to protect his new comrade even if they didn't get along now. He knew that they would someday in the future.

Both Pokemon glared at each other. After what seemed like several hours they charged.

Elena and the Luxray were dashing through the forest at top speed. The Luxray's speed had amazed Elena; the Pokemon was avoiding low branches and tree trunks like he had been doing this his whole life. And he probably had.

"Um, Luxray?" she asked. Elena felt kind of silly. How was she going to talk to this Pokemon when she couldn't understand him?


The Luxray's ear twitched back as if he had heard her. This was a little awkward, what was she supposed to say? Well, there was only one thing she could say.

"I'm sorry, Luxray. I forced you and Little Shinx apart from each other. I-I'm..."

"It's ok."

Elena gasped softly as Luxray came to a slow stop. Luxray turned his head to the girl. "It's ok. I'm not angry. I will miss him, but I know that you'll take care of him." the Pokemon said softly.

Elena was really confused; how was she able to understand a wild Pokemon?

Suddenly the Pokemon's ears twitched forward and he raced to a scent the soon came to Elena.

Fire? she thought

Starkk collided into a tree and fell to the ground and struggled to get back to his feet. He looked to Bejamin who was surprisingly holding his ground. Glaring back to his own opponent, Starkk charged forward with a roar as did Boss. This time however, as Starkk roared a small flame erupted from his mouth. With wide eyes the attack hit Boss right in the chest.

"Gaaaahhhhhhh!! Run away!!!" the Bidood leader cried out as he was hit by the attack. He started running deep into the forest, his minions close behind.

Bejamin walked over to Starkk, both staring in confusion. They turned to each other in shock.

"We did it." Starkk said dumbfound.

Bejamin merely blinked in a daze.

Starkk leaped into the air raising his fist in victory, "We did it!!!" he shouted in joy.

"Starkk, Little Shinx?!" the two Pokemon heard.

The bushes rustled for a moment and soon, Luxray and Elena saw an interesting sight. There were a few Bidoof knocked out. Starkk and the small Shinx were celebrating, well Starkk was any way. With fresh tears emerging Elena hopped off of Luxray and ran towards her Pokemon.

"Elena! Oof!" Starkk said as he was suddenly hugged. Before Bejamin could react he was also caught in the tight grasp of the human."Elena?"

"Just shut up." Elena said with a soft sob. The tears just raced down her face; she couldn't stop them. She was worried the whole time, since she was scared for their health. But most of all, she was happy that they were safe and alive.

Bejamin was still baffled. Why was this human crying for them? What exactly was she afraid of?

"She was worried about you."

Bejamin looked up and saw his father sitting a few feet away from them. "Why would she be worried about me? I'm just a runt." the Shinx said.

Elena sat up and looked at her two Pokemon, "It doesn't matter on how big or small you are. What really matters is that you have the strength to fight for what you believe in." the Luxray continued.

With a smile Starkk gave Elena a hug telling her that they were ok. With a chuckle Elena took out a Potion and started treating Starkk's wounds. It stung but it only lasted for a few seconds. His arm felt better, with a light laugh he reached for Bejamin.

Bejamin looked at the Chimchar's hand, then to Elena, and back to his father. Getting up he walked over to the Luxray and rubbed his head against the blue leg. "We'll see each other again, you can count on it. I'll get bigger and stronger." he said with determination.

Elena and Starkk stayed quiet and let Bejamin and his father have their last moment together. "He may be a little stubborn, but he's got a kind heart." Elena said.

"How did you find us? I mean I know you told me to look out here. But you didn't exactly know where we were." Starkk pointed out.

"Luxray helped me. He wanted me to get on his back and he ran straight here. But I could understand him." Elena explained. Starkk looked at her in confusion. That was odd. Human's could only understand a wild Pokemon if it was their first encounter. Luxray weren't even local in this area. "Maybe one day we'll figure it out." she said.

Luxray lowered his head and purred in reply, signaling that he would miss his son and he will wait until they would see each other again. Bejamin heard footsteps coming from behind him and turned around. Elena knelt down, her chocolate brown eyes shinning, "Would you like to come with us, little Shinx?" she asked extending her hand.

Bejamin looked at her hand and sighed, putting his paw in her open hand.

"It's not "Little Shinx". My name's "Bejamin."
